Each step erased

by time or shovel.

 

Each step toward the grave.

 

We can’t live with

such forbidden knowledge.

 

Fruit of a disappearing tree.

 

We think we’ll see

our precious ones

 

again and again—sunrise and moonglow,

 

alder, acorn, and ash,

kingfisher, heron, and lark,

 

Monday and Sunday.

 

We walk a road

named Delusion

 

in a country called Dilemma.

 

Each step a folly,

a seductive torpor that makes

 

our burden bearable but detours

 

our journey toward disaster.
