Und So Weiter

Each step erased

by time or shovel.

Each step toward the grave.

We can’t live with

such forbidden knowledge.

Fruit of a disappearing tree.

We think we’ll see

our precious ones

again and again—sunrise and moonglow,

alder, acorn, and ash,

kingfisher, heron, and lark,

Monday and Sunday.

We walk a road

named Delusion

in a country called Dilemma.

Each step a folly,

a seductive torpor that makes

our burden bearable but detours

our journey toward disaster.
